Writers’ Room 7.0 with Evan Linder and Calamity West: Applications Due

The Writers’ Room (7.0) is an intensive seven week writing workshop led by Founding Co-Artistic Director Evan Linder (Byhalia Mississippi, The Bear Suit of Happiness, 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche) and acclaimed Chicago playwright Calamity West (Rolling, Give it All Back, The Peacock). Since it’s first session in January 2015, TNC’s Writers’ Room has seen over 60 new full-length plays developed with tools used in The New Colony workshop process. Five plays written in The Writers Room have already gone on to see world premieres in Chicago over the past three seasons including The Light by Loy Webb which will premiere at MCC in New York as part of its 2018-19 Season.

Meeting Time & Place
The Writers’ Room will meet on Sundays 10:30am-1:30pm at The Den Theatre from May 13th-June 24th. Writers’ Room 7.0 will reconvene for two additional reading dates on August 12th and August 19th, 2018.

Attendance at the May 13th session is mandatory.

Instructors
EVAN LINDER is the Founding Co-Artistic Director of The New Colony in Chicago. A playwright, actor, director and educator, Evan is a proud graduate of the College of Charleston and the recipient of his alma mater’s 2016 Alumnus of the Year Award. In 2016, Evan reprised the role of Jim in the remount of his play “Byhalia, Mississippi” at Steppenwolf’s 1700 Theatre. “Byhalia, Mississippi” will be seen as part of the Kennedy Center’s 2018-19 Season in June 2019. His other plays include “FRAT”, “11:11”, “The Warriors”, “The Bear Suit of Happiness” (published by Chicago Dramaworks), “B-Side Studio” (co-writer Ike Holter) and “5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche” (co-writer Andrew Hobgood, published by Samuel French) which ran Off-Broadway at the SoHo Playhouse from 2012-2013 and has been performed in over forty states and on five continents. His play “The Hunted” (co-writer Paul Oakley Stovall) was a 2017 O’Neill finalist and was recently given a workshop at Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s Black Swan Lab. His play commissioned by the Goodman, “Jo and Liv”, was given a staged reading there in July 2017 directed by Krissy Vanderwarker. He is the creator of The New Colony’s Writers’ Room that has now welcomed over 60 emerging playwrights since its inception. CALAMITY WEST is a Chicago-based, award-winning, Kilroys-cited playwright. Her play HINTER recently received its world-premiere at Steep Theatre Company in the winter of 2018. In January 2018 her play ENGINES AND INSTRUMENTS OF FLIGHT: A FANTASIA IN THREE ACTS, originally commissioned at The Goodman Theatre, had its first New York reading at The Roundabout. Her newest play IN THE CANYON is currently in development at Jackalope Theatre Company and will be given its first public reading with Sanguine Theatre Company of New York in March 2018. Another of her plays, GREETINGS FROM MOSCOW! A LOVE STORY, is currently in development at TimeLine Theatre Company’s Playwrights Collective. Additional plays by Calamity West include: GIVE IT ALL BACK (2016, Kilroy-cited); ROLLING (2016); IBSEN IS DEAD (2014); THE PEACOCK (2013, Kilroys honorable mention); THE GACY PLAY (2012); and COMMON HATRED (2012). In 2014 she was recipient of the 3Arts Award. Calamity is a company member of Jackalope Theatre Company and an artistic associate of Sideshow Theatre Company. She teaches playwriting at the University of Chicago and Webster University. She is represented by The Gersh Agency.
