Grant Love

If you’ve never had to write grants before, then you might not be familiar with the criteria around applying. First of all, you have to be eligible to even apply for the grant. And for many of the major arts-supporting grants, you have to have been in existence for at least two years. The basic principle of this is to help ensure that your company isn’t going to dissolve six months after they have given you $5,000 for a project slated nine months later.

Until last spring, we had not reached the two year eligibility requirement. Which is why our major funding was raised through Chasegiving and social media campaigns like The Point. However, beginning last April, we were able to begin applying for grants.

And for some reason, our ranting madness paid off: we were granted funding for all three applications we sent out! So we would like to give a huge THANK YOU to the foundations that are making our first Third Season possible:

ROTHMAN FOUNDATION
Providing funding to support production costs for Pancake Breakfast and The Warriors

DRIEHAUS FOUNDATION
Providing funding to support the development and workshopping of The Warriors and future productions of this season.

ALPHAWOOD FOUNDATION
Providing support for the general operating costs of 2011.

It takes a lot of trust for foundations to support start-up arts organizations. They’re not particularly reliable, and have a history of folding early and easily. The New Colony puts a tremendous amount of effort into sustaining the financial strength of our company - but we can’t do it on our own. Grants like these and donations from our supporters are what keep us going. Last year, 68% of our income was from donors and foundations. That’s incredible. And humbling. It means the world to us that there are people out there who believe in our mission and work as much as we do.

Let’s keep this crazy party going until we can dance no more!

Much love,
The New Colony
